• Deep Clean the Drum: Before installing the new plate and shoes, use a wire brush and brake cleaner to remove all rust, mud, and old dust from the inside of the wheel drum. A clean surface is critical for braking efficiency.

• Check the Seal: Ensure the rubber seals around the brake plate are in good condition. Since the Recon is often used in mud, a tight seal prevents water from entering and ruining your new brake shoes.

• Lightly Sand the Drum: If your brake drum surface is glazed or shiny, lightly scuff it with medium-grit sandpaper. This helps the new shoes "bite" better and prevents squeaking.

• Lube the Cam: Apply a small amount of high-temperature brake grease to the brake cam and pivot points. Do not get any grease on the friction surface of the shoes.

• Adjust the Cable: After assembly, remember to adjust your rear brake cable tension. There should be a small amount of play in the lever/pedal before the brakes begin to engage.
