🛠️ Installation Tips

  • Dielectric Grease is Essential: Apply a small dab of dielectric grease inside the spark plug boot and the coil terminal. This prevents the rubber from "bonding" to the plug and protects the electrical connection from moisture and vibration-induced corrosion.

  • Check Primary Resistance: Before mounting, ensure the primary plug (the 4-pin or 2-pin connector) is clean. Even a tiny bit of road grime in the connector can cause a "stumble" that feels like a bad coil but is actually just a poor connection.

  • Routing and Clearance: When installing the new wires, ensure they do not touch the cylinder cooling fins or the exhaust headers. The high heat will melt the silicone insulation, leading to a short circuit and engine misfires.

  • The "Click" Test: When pushing the wire onto the coil and the spark plug, listen and feel for a distinct "click." If you don't hear it, the metal terminal isn't fully seated, which can lead to arcing and "radio noise" in your bike's electronics.

  • Disconnect the Battery: Always disconnect the negative battery terminal before swapping the coil. This prevents accidental shorting and protects the ECM (Electronic Control Module) from voltage spikes during the swap.

🔍 Troubleshooting Guide

Issue Possible Cause Solution
Engine Misfire / Popping Cracked coil housing or bad wire. Inspect the coil for "hairline cracks." Under high load, electricity will jump through these cracks to the frame instead of the spark plug. Replace with this kit to restore spark.
Hard Starting (Hot) Internal coil thermal failure. If the bike starts fine cold but won't start after a gas station stop, the coil's internal copper windings are likely expanding and shorting when hot.
Backfiring on Deceleration Weak spark / Unburnt fuel. If the spark is too weak to ignite the fuel in the cylinder, the raw gas ignites in the exhaust pipe. Fresh wires and a high-output coil usually solve this.
"Check Engine" Light (Ion Sense) Incompatible or worn coil. Modern Harleys use the coil to "sense" combustion (Ion Sensing). A faulty coil will trigger a P0374 or similar code. This 31696-07A spec unit is designed to communicate correctly with the Delphi ECM.
Stumbling Under Heavy Load Ignition "leakage" at the boots. Open the throttle in a high gear; if the bike stumbles, your wires are likely leaking voltage. New 8mm or 10mm wires provide the insulation needed for high-torque pulls.
